Cathy's home five weeks after heart op

By Lisa Smyth

A Northern Ireland woman who was given a second chance at life after getting a new heart has returned home just five weeks after the gruelling transplant procedure.

Cathy McCracken (41) - who impressed medics with her positive attitude and speedy recovery - is now back at her Lisburn home enjoying family life with her husband Les and two children, Sarah-Louise (18) and nine-year-old Daniel.

As Cathy looks forward to her new future, she appealed to people in Northern Ireland not yet signed up to the NHS Organ Donor Register to make the simple step and help save lives.

"I am only here today because someone out there signed the register and my children have their mum back for the same reason," she said.

Mrs McCracken suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy - a disease that prevents the heart from pumping blood effectively.

She was forced to put her life on hold when doctors told her she needed a heart transplant.

After two months of waiting, a suitable donor was found.
