CERN 'Big Bang' scientist at Europa hotel in Belfast

A scientist working to recreate the ‘Big Bang' in the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland is to return to his native Belfast to give a keynote address at a major engineers conference.

Dr Stephen Myers, director of accelerators and technology at the CERN particle physics laboratory in Geneva, is to give the address at the Engineers Ireland Annual Conference.

Entitled Engineering Enterprise In Times Of Change, the conference will take place at the Europa Hotel on April 26 and 27, and Dr Myers is to speak on its opening day.

The Large Hadron Collider is a 17-mile long circular tunnel that lies 300ft below the ground. It is being used to reproduce conditions similar to the Big Bang effect that scientists credit with creating the universe as we know it.
