Charity scam condemned

East Belfast DUP MLA Robin Newton has voiced his concern following contact from constituents about bogus charity collections.

“I was recently made aware of the scam being carried out in the Albertbridge and Newtownards Roads as residents were asked to donate clothing to a breast cancer charity with large plastic bags being left at their homes,” he said.

Those who are carrying out this scam have been calculating in their choice of charity, using an illness which has touched the lives of so many throughout our community. They also know about the charitable nature of east Belfast people. I would ask anyone faced with this type of collection method to ensure that there is a charity reference number on any flyer, sticker or bag before they donate.

“This reference number is required by law to ensure that the charity is registered and recognised by the Charities Commission,” said Mr Newton.
