Chief Constable George Hamilton's first arrest failure

By Steven Alexander

The PSNI Chief Constable has revealed in a live question and answer session on Twitter that he lost the court case after his first ever arrest.

Asked if remembered his first arrest, George Hamilton replied: "Yes - disorderly behaviour in Enniskillen! Lost the case at court though - poor performance."

He also admitted that plans to recruit more officers were still in doubt due to budget cuts.

"Hoping to run a police recruitment campaign in October 2015. Not finalised due to financial uncertainty," he wrote.

There were some light-hearted moments in the PSNI chief's second online Q&A, with comedian Jake O'Kane asking: "Why aren't there more ginger police officers? Gingerism? Give us sunblock factor 50 and we'll do the job!"

Mr Hamilton replied: "Jake, as a former 'ginger' myself when I had hair, I will ensure it is not an impediment to recruitment."

He also said he would be "happier" if there were more Catholic members of the PSNI.
