Child abuse accused named

A District Judge has refused a lawyer's application not to have his client, who faces child sex abuse charges, named by the media.

The application was made at a preliminary inquiry at Londonderry Magistrates Court when Clive Cowan (25), whose address was given as care of Thiepval Barracks, Lisburn, in Co Antrim, appeared before District Judge Barney McElholm charged with four counts of indecently assaulting a female child on four occasions between March 1, 2002 and April 30, 2002.

Requesting that Cowan should not be named by the media, a defence lawyer said what he called "the jungle drums are already sounding" as a result of which it did not take a great deal to make the connection between his client and the complainant.

However, Mr McElholm said unless there was specific evidence that naming the defendant could lead to the complainant being identified, he was not granting the application.

The defendant was released on his own bail of £1,000 to appear before the Crown Court for his arraignment on January 20.
