Child killed and van driver arrested in Banbridge road crash

A 14-year-old boy has died after being hit by a van in Banbridge on Thursday morning.

Police had arrested the driver - a 30-year-old man. He has since been released unconditionally.

The collision happened shortly before 8am on the Scarva Road, which was closed for a few hours.

The teenager was a pupil at St Colman's College, according to SDLP South Down MLA Seán Rogers.

He expressed his sympathy to the family of the 14-year-old: "My heart goes out to the boy’s family, to his friends and the school community of St Colman’s College, Newry at this tragic time.

"This is absolutely heartbreaking for the boy’s family, and my thoughts and prayers are with them at this incredibly sad time."

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or who was travelling on the Scarva Road around the time of the incident to contact the Collision Investigation Unit at Steeple Police Station.
