Chilean flamingos wade into Belfast Zoo for extended visit
Belfast Zoo has welcomed some colourful new arrivals.
Plocia, the female red panda has been brought over from Plock Zoo in Poland to breed with Rua, who arrived in north Belfast from Cork Zoo in 2010.
Also new to the Antrim Road zoo are 15 Chilean flamingos, bringing the flock total to 36.
There are six species of flamingo in the world, however populations of Chilean variety in the wild have fallen from 500,000 to 200,000 in the past 40 years.
Zoo manager Mark Challis said: “We have been planning and anticipating the arrival of the flamingos and the red panda for quite some time.
“They have all settled in well and the whole team are looking forward to playing an active role in the conservation of two such wonderful species.”
