It may have been a chilly start to 2021, but that did not stop some people marking the new year with a dip in the sea.

Swimmers took to the freezing water at several coastal locations across Northern Ireland in a bid to shake off the post-festive blues.

Swimmers traditionally mark Christmas Day and New Year's Day with a dip, despite the cool temperatures.

At Carnlough, Nathan McCaull from Broughshane, Co Antrim, was among the bathers taking a splash in the harbour.

Meanwhile, at Helen's Bay in Co Down, Rachael Morrison from Bangor was starting the year with a swim.

Around the north coast, some less adventurous people opted to mark the day with a walk along a strand.

It was a similar scene at beaches across the UK as people shook off the cold to take to the water.

New year dippers were seen jumping into the sea in coastal areas such as Saltburn, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth and Scarborough.
