Church of England’s vote against women bishops 'won’t affect Church of Ireland'

By Alf McCreary

The Church of England’s rejection yesterday of women bishops will not influence the Church of Ireland policy to approve them.

In 1991, the Church of Ireland voted for the ordination of women as deacons, priests and bishops.

There are no women CofI bishops, nor are there likely to be in the near future. Canon Ian Ellis, editor of the Church of Ireland Gazette, said: “Our Church’s position on the matter remains unaltered, and I support that position.

I do not see yesterday’s vote as the end of the matter at all.

“For the Church of England it is important that when the step is taken there is as wide a consensus as possible.

“I feel that, with patience and further dialogue, this is attainable in due course.”
