Church packed for funeral of father who died in bike crash

By Mark Edwards

Mourners packed into a crowded church yesterday to say farewell to father-of-six Neil Stewart who tragically died in a road crash near Newry.

The motorcyclist from Markethill in Co Armagh died on Saturday, September 28, after his motorbike was involved in a collision with another vehicle close to the junction of Appletree Hill near Newry.

His wife Sandra, who was a pillion passenger, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Mr Stewart's death was the second tragedy to hit the family after his brother Howard died in a crash in the same area a number of years ago.

His funeral took place at Ballenon Reformed Presbyterian Church in Poyntzpass yesterday.

Ulster Unionist councillor Jim Speers, who knows the family, attended the service.

He said: "It was one of the biggest funerals I have ever attended. It was incredible.

"There was no chance of getting into the church.

"There was people standing on the lamp-posts.

"The Stewarts are a well-known and respected family."
