Churches come together for carol service on Derry walls

By Donna Deeney

An interfaith carol service will be held on Londonderry’s walls after receiving overwhelming support last year.

Over 300 people braved the cold last Christmas to attend the service jointly organised by the Rev David Latimer, from First Derry Presbyterian Church, and Fr Michael Canny.

The churchmen have now decided to make it an annual event.

The ecumenical event is being supported by Derry City Council community relations officers and is open to everyone.

The Rev Latimer said: “It will give people the opportunity to take time out from the shopping and organising to reflect on the essence of Christmas and its religious and spiritual significance.

“During the service, there will be performances from choirs from colleges from the maintained and controlled sectors and it will also be attended by community groups from both sides of the Foyle.

“The event will culminate in refreshments being served in the Tower Hotel to allow people to have a warm drink and mingle with other attendees.”
