City centre stores are hit by power failure

By Staff Reporter

A number of businesses in Belfast were forced to close for a time yesterday afternoon due to a power cut.

The outage occurred in the Arthur Street and Castle Lane areas just after 1pm. Donegall Place businesses were also hit. Traffic lights in the area were affected by the electricity failure.

It was estimated 240 city centre properties were affected at the height of the outage. Within an hour that number was cut to 33. Power was restored to all by 2.25pm.

NIE said: "A fault in an underground electricity cable left around 240 customers in Belfast city centre without electricity. NIE Networks' emergency teams responded immediately, restoring power to all but 33 properties within an hour.

"Engineers are continuing to work to restore power to the remaining properties."
