Co Down Jockey kicked by horse and then run over returns home

By Staff Reporter

An unlucky Co Down jockey who was run over by an ambulance after a horse kicked him in the face in Italy has returned home to Northern Ireland.

The vehicle broke 22-year-old Chris Meehan's leg after his mount knocked him out, broke his nose and left him with a nasty gash to his jaw that required 27 stitches.

"The first kick caught me on the nose and broke my nose outright," the Crossgar man told UTV Live. "The second kick caught me on the jaw and bust my jaw open straight away."

That kick knocked Chris out - but things were about to get even worse.

"They drove the ambulance up alongside me whilst I was on the ground getting seen to," Chris said. "When they went to reverse the ambulance around me, they reversed it straight up onto my outstretched leg.

"They actually stopped the ambulance while it was on top of my leg."

In another twist, the unlucky rider's father teaches paramedics how to drive ambulances.

"I think he's getting a bit more stick than I am," said Chris.
