Co Down student nurse dies after night out in Derry - Police appeal for witnesses to woman's last movements before she was found unconscious in Creggan house
A 21-year-old man has been arrested
A post-mortem will be held on Friday to determine how a student nurse from Co Down died in Londonderry following a night out.
Paramedics found the 19-year-old woman unconscious at the foot of a stairway in Creggan in the early hours of Thursday.
She died after being rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital.
Police have arrested a 21-year-old man, who is being questioned in Antrim serious crime suite.
Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey appealed for information to trace her the young woman's last movements.
“The death of any young person is always tragic, and I would first of all like to express my condolences to the relatives and friends of the young woman," he said.
“She was aged just 19 and was from the Co Down area.
"She was in Derry as part of her university studies to become a nurse.
“What we know so far is that shortly before 2.30am, paramedics were called to a flat at Cromore Gardens.
“They found the young woman unconscious at the foot of some stairs. She was taken to hospital, where she sadly died.
“We are trying to establish her movements before 2am. We know that she was in a nightclub in the city centre with friends. We believe she left the nightclub in a taxi at about 1am.
“We are keeping and open mind as to the circumstances of this tragic death."
Anyone who saw anything unusual in the Cromore Gardens area is asked to contact detectives at Strand Road police station by calling the 101 non-emergency number and asking for extension 57072.
Police have not formally released the name of the young woman.
SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey said it was a tragedy.
"Residents living in nearby Cromore Gardens have been left reeling from this news. I know that people of Derry will now rally around the family of the victim at this incredibly difficult time."
"I want to pass on my sincere condolences to the family of this young woman who will be understandably devastated at the sudden loss of a loved one.
"I understand that a 21-year-old man has been arrested following the discovery and would encourage anyone who may have an information related to the death to co-operate fully with the police as they seek to determine the circumstances."
