Coleraine mother out of hospital after shooting

By Allan Preston

A Coleraine mother shot in the foot in her own home has been released from hospital.

It is understood her son, who was shot in the leg in the attack, is awaiting surgery in hospital.

The shooting took place on Sunday evening after a masked man entered their home on James Street in the Co Londonderry town.

The mother, who is in her 50s, and her son, aged in his 20s, were taken to the Causeway Hospital afterwards.

PUP councillor Russell Watton knows the victims and spoke to the mother yesterday.

"The mother is out, she was hit by a ricochet of a bullet that went into the floor then into her foot," he said.

"The son is still in the Causeway Hospital and is due to get an operation on his leg."

Last night the Northern Health Trust said they were not able to release any details about the condition of the patients.

Mr Watton said the motives for the attack remained unclear and he believed it was strange that the gunman acted alone.

He added: "It's scary for people on the street."
