Communities minister hails new equipment purchasing scheme

A new scheme to help voluntary and community groups buy equipment has been unveiled.

Grants of between £1,500 and £5,000 will be available for organisations that have difficulty accessing mainstream funding, according to the Department of Communities.

Some £270,000 has been set aside for the initiative.

Communities Minister Paul Givan said: "This pilot programme aims to assist those community organisations who are in need of small items of equipment to enable them to deliver much-needed services across the community.

"It is intended that this fund will help small organisations increase their levels of participation, enhance their activities and encourage new levels of volunteering in this important sector."

Applications are expected from a range of groups across the youth, sporting, charitable and religious sectors.

Johnny McShane, from the Limavady Community Development Initiative (LCDI), which will oversee the pilot, said: " This funding will enhance organisations' vital offering for local communities."
