Community worker Philip Lamont settles tabloid libel action

By Alan Erwin

A north Belfast community worker has settled a libel action brought over Press allegations about him.

Philip Lamont issued proceedings following claims made in the Sunday World. Details of the alleged defamatory material cannot be disclosed for legal reasons.

A three-day hearing had been due to get under way in front of a jury at the High Court in Belfast.

Victims' campaigner Raymond McCord was set to give evidence on behalf of the defendants. However, following out of court negotiations a confidential resolution was reached.

Counsel for Mr Lamont, who works in the Mount Vernon area of the city, confirmed that the action was to be stayed on terms endorsed.

On that basis the judge, Mr Justice Gillen, discharged the jury. Outside the court the plaintiff's solicitor said: "The action resolved on terms that were satisfactory to my client."
