A man stopped by police cycling on the pavement with a gate under his arm at 3.45am told them he found it, Limavady Magistrates Court heard.
Mervyn McElwee (42) of Eventide Gardens in Limavady was jailed for theft and going equipped for theft.
The court heard that on October 24 police were dealing with an incident and saw the defendant on his bike. Later, at 3.45am they returned to the same area and saw the defendant again riding his bike, but this time he had a large green gate under his arm.
When questioned he told police he found it and the fence posts.
It was later established that the gate and fence posts had been stolen from a Housing Executive property near his home.
Defence counsel Nicola Rountree said her client had no need of the gate or the fence posts and was just being "a complete nuisance".
He was sentenced to a total of nine months in prison.
