Concepta Leonard murder: Grieving brother says nephew Conor 'will feel scars of tragedy for life'

By Victoria Leonard

The brother of Concepta Leonard has described the tragedy which claimed his sister's life as "appalling and horrific" - and said her son Conor will suffer "life-lasting scars" as a result.

In an interview with The Impartial Reporter, Fergal Leonard said that the late music teacher - known as Connie - had been devoted to her 30-year-old son, who has Down's Syndrome.

He described Ms Leonard as her son's "rock".

He stated: "Connie and Conor just go together, if there was ever a pair to be together it was the two of them.

"The scars of this horrific event are going to be life-lasting for him.

"I would like to thank the emergency services and the staff at South West Acute Hospital, the doctors and nurses, for all the work they have done to help Conor."

Mr Leonard said that in addition to following in her father Dinny's footsteps by playing and teaching Irish music, Ms Leonard had also been a school cook with the Education Authority across Fermanagh, as well as at Jones Memorial Primary School.

"Connie has brought happiness to the lives of thousands of people with her God-given gift of playing music," he continued.

"Connie and our dad have been blessed with an ability to be able to pass this gift on to many musicians throughout Fermanagh, Tyrone, Leitrim and Cavan.

"She loved her job in school meals and she made many great friends through her work in the different schools throughout the county."

Mr Leonard praised the support which his family had received from the community since his sister's death.

"I would like to thank everyone for the prayers and messages of support that we have received and for the prayers and support that I know we are going to get," he added. "I would ask for everyone to please pray for Connie, Conor and dad and for all of our family, our entire family network and for all of Connie and Conor's loyal network of friends."

Ms Leonard is survived by her son Conor, her father Dinny, brothers Fergal and Kieran, sister Denise, nieces Katie and Sheana, nephew James, and is predeceased by her mother Moira.
