Controlled explosion carried out in north Belfast
A controlled explosion has been carried out at the scene of a security alert in Ardoyne
Police and bomb disposal experts are still dealing with the incident in the Alliance Avenue area, where residents have been evacuated from their homes.
The security alert commenced on Tuesday as part of inquiries following reports of shots being fired on Monday afternoon.
A number of holes were discovered in the window of a property and on Tuesday afternoon police discovered a suspicious object in the property.
A security operation was implemented straight away, with Alliance Avenue being closed between Etna Drive and Berwick Road and approximately 30 houses evacuated.
North Belfast Area Commander, Chief Inspector Andy Freeburn said: "This is a massive inconvenience to local residents, particularly those who have been evacuated.
"The policing operation is absolutely necessary to ensure the safety of the local community and to protect everyone. I would ask the public for their continued patience and understanding as we deal with this as quickly as we can.
"I would appeal to anyone who was in the area and noticed anyone acting suspiciously or any suspicious vehicles to contact police on 0845 600 8000 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
