'Co-ordinated' attacks on republican memorials condemned
Sinn Fein MLA Megan Fearon has condemned "coordinated attacks" on republican memorials in the Newry area.
The word "scum" was daubed on one of the memorials.
The south Armagh representative described the series of attacks on hunger strike memorials in the village of Meigh and on the A1 Newry bypass as despicable and outrageous.
She said they were clearly co-ordinated.
She said: "They are a deliberate attempt to insult and antagonise local people who respect and cherish the memory of the 1981 hungers strikers.
“All memorials should be treated with dignity and respect and should not be targeted in this way.
“I have no doubt that the republican community here will rise to the occasion and restore the monuments.
“The desecration of any memorial or monument to the dead is despicable and these attacks should be roundly condemned by all.”
