A coroner has resisted holding an inquest into the death of a man found in a boot three years ago.

Gerald Mulligan’s body was discovered in the vehicle in Limehurst Way, Lisburn, in September 2016.

His son Gerard Mulligan was charged with murder, but later died.

A barrister for part of Gerald Mulligan’s family, Malachy McGowan, said he was pressing for an inquest as well as disclosure of legal documentation.

“There is material available that was before the inquest into the death of my client’s brother, touching upon the circumstances of the death of her father.”

The brief hearing was told the family was “fractured” over whether an inquest should be held.

Coroner Paddy McGurgan adjourned the hearing until January.

He said:  “I have resisted an inquest on a number of occasions.

“I am going to allow you time and allow you disclosure.”

The preliminary hearing of an inquest into the death was held in Belfast on Tuesday.
