Correction: DRD Roads Service

An article stated incorrectly that 7,319 disabled (blue) parking badges were issued in the last two years in the names of people who had already died (News, June 26). As the Audit Commission report on which the article was based made clear, the badges belonged to owners who had subsequently died; they were not issued post mortem. We apologise for the error.

The article further stated that the badges potentially cost the taxpayer £3,659,500 over a two-year period. The commission's calculation was based on an estimated black market value of £500-per-badge. However, as the commission's report made clear, DRD Roads Service disagrees with this methodology and believes it is highly unlikely that close relatives of deceased owners sell the badges on, stating that a more likely explanation is that the badges have simply not been returned.
