Cost of sitting driver theory test is cut by £5

By Claire Harrison

The cost of taking the driver theory test has been cut from £30 to £25.

In good news for learner drivers, Environment Minister Mark H Durkan announced that the price of sitting the test has been cut by £5. Overall, this will save learners £400,000 annually and will come into effect within weeks.

Mr Durkan, said: "I am pleased to announce that from this October the fee for car and motorcycle theory tests will fall by £5, taking the cost of a test from £30 to £25. I can also announce that I will reduce the fee by a further £2 in October 2015 to bring the cost down to just £23. Theory test fees for other categories of vehicle will also be reduced." The SDLP man said the move will reap extra savings which he is passing on to drivers.

"By agreeing new contract arrangements for the delivery of theory tests I have secured significant cost savings," he said.

"I believe it is both right and proper that I pass these savings on to customers. It is my intention to ensure that my Department's services are delivered in such a way that they meet customers' needs at the least cost possible."
