Council anger as robbers steal bell for a second time

By Claire McNeilly

An appeal has been made for the return of a bell stolen from the centre of the Millennium Peace Maze in Castlewellan Forest Park.

Independent councillor Patrick Clarke slammed the theft and said it was the second time that the item had been stolen.

"I am very concerned that once again the large brass-type bell has been removed," he added. "The original was also removed and likely sold for scrap. The bell is a popular tourist attraction, with many enjoying the ringing tone."

Mr Clarke described the item as being 15 inches high and 12 in diameter and said it "would certainly have been removed by more than one person".

"The motives for the removal must be to sell it as there can be no other legitimate reason why people would take the time and effort at night to travel to the park and remove and transport the bell," the councillor added. "I would strongly appeal to those who have removed the bell to do the right thing and return it."
