Council row threatens seaside venue

By Chris Kilpatrick

A famous north coast theatre — which has screened plays and films for over 80 years — faces closure due to a wrangle with the local council, it is claimed.

The Playhouse in Portrush has entertained generations of visitors to the Co Antrim town.

Now its owners say restrictions put on its entertainment licence by Coleraine Borough Council risk putting it out of business.

The two are at loggerheads regarding noise levels, with the council demanding the venue reduces noise from 11pm onwards when hosting events.

Playhouse manager Gary Hassin said without a relaxation in the rules, the Playhouse, along with its staff of more than 20, face a bleak future.

“We have a really great venue and we are really trying to put Portrush on the map,” said Mr Hassin. “They (the council) should be happy people want to come back.”

Coleraine Borough Council declined to comment.
