Councillor charged with obstructing police officer

An independent republican member of Derry City and Strabane District Council has been charged with obstructing a police officer.

Gary Donnelly is alleged to have committed the offence at his home at Iniscairn Road in the Creggan area of the city on July 22, 2015.

It is understood that the charge relates to a PSNI investigation into the firing of a volley of shots outside the home in Templegrove of Peggy O'Hara, the mother of INLA hunger striker Patsy O'Hara, following her death in July of last year.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott told District Judge Barney McElholm at the Magistrates Court in the city yesterday that the defendant would be contesting the charge against him and that there were a large number of police witnesses in the case.

The defendant was not in court and his case was adjourned until September 5 when a date is due to be fixed for the contested hearing which is expected to last up to two hours.
