Councillor demanding 'clarity' over Fianna Fail plans in Northern Ireland

By Kevin Doyle

A Northern Ireland councillor has piled pressure on Micheal Martin to clarify whether Fianna Fail will contest next year's local elections north of the Border.

Jarlath Tinnelly has written to all of the party's representatives in Leinster House, saying it was "not unreasonable to ask for certainty" in relation to his re-election campaign.

The representative for Newry, Mourne & Down District Council said he was looking on "with envy" as selection conventions took place in the Republic.

His intervention comes after Mr Martin felt compelled to reprimand two members of his parliamentary party for taking part in an unofficial campaign launch for councillor Sorcha McAnespy.

Mr Tinnelly said he wanted "certainty and clarity".
