Council’s events ban plan 'aimed at young'

By Noel McAdam

Culture Minister Caral Ni Chuilin has warned that the Arts Council could become involved in North Down Borough Council’s plan to stop young people from attending key events.

Her suggestion came after MLA and North Down councillor Steven Agnew said that the plans would effectively ban events such as last year’s blockbuster Eminem concert in Bangor.

“The council’s proposed policy (targets) acts aimed at those aged under 25, in order to, in its words, avoid anti-social behaviour,” the Green Party leader added.

“With these actions they are pushing young people to the margins — the very things that do encourage anti-social behaviour, or a desire to up and leave the area when they finish their education.”

The Sinn Fein minister said if Mr Agnew wished, he should ask for the Arts Council, which distributes funding to local authorities, to meet with councillors whose plans involve Bangor’s Ward Park.

“Children and young people are entitled to facilities in North Down, just as they are anywhere else,” she said.
