County Down: Missing 'vulnerable' woman is found safe

By Joanne Sweeney

A "vulnerable" woman who went missing on Tuesday has been found safe following a full-scale land and sea search in Co Down.

Elaine McDowell, from Newtownards, was last seen walking along the Old Shore Road in the town around 12.45pm.

When a reported sighting of the 51-year-old was made in the Strangford area, the Coastguard mounted a search of Strangford Lough and surrounding waters and land.

The operation was assisted by a rescue helicopter from the Irish Coastguard, which helped scan the shoreline.

It is understood that the search, also involving police officers, was focused largely on parts of the Ards Peninsula shoreline which Ms McDowell was known to frequent as a keen and regular walker.

A spokesman from the RNLI lifeboat station in Co Down last night confirmed the rescue operation, which started at around 5pm yesterday, ended when the missing woman was located.

It's understood she was found safe and well in the Strangford area.
