Couple face trial over claim car was stolen in burglary

By Paul Higgins

A husband and wife who claimed their home had been burgled and their car stolen have been sent for trial accused of perverting justice.

Standing side-by-side in the dock at Newtownards Magistrates Court, Garth William Walsh (35) and his wife Kim Walsh (24), from east Belfast, confirmed they understood the charges against them.

The couple, from Brooklands Crescent in Dundonald, are accused of perverting the course of justice on September 15, 2012 by falsely claiming that during a burglary at their home, their car and their car keys had been stolen.

Neither defendant chose to give evidence or call witnesses on their behalf, but they confirmed they were not objecting to the preliminary enquiry.

A prosecution lawyer submitted the pair had a prima facie case to answer. As their solicitor took no issue, district judge Mark Hamill returned them for trial to Downpatrick Crown Court on October 14.
