Couple forced to split over US passport dispute

A devoted Northern Ireland husband is facing an unknown period of separation from his American wife following a dispute over his US immigration status.

Ruairi Oakes (29) from Killyleagh does not know when he will be reunited with Amy, his wife of six years, after being forced to say goodbye at Dublin airport just days ago.

The couple had returned to Ruairi’s Co Down home last month to visit his terminally-ill father just before his death but when they were preparing to return to their Pittsburgh home last Thursday, he discovered that he faced a 10-year entry ban because he had left the US before being fully legalised there.

Saddened by the double blow of his enforced separation from his wife and his father’s death, Ruairi expressed hope when he told the Down Recorder: “Our lawyer has told us that our situation is highly unusual and we can only hope officials will re-examine our case and allow us to be re-united in the near future.”
