A terrified elderly couple are recovering after waking to find two burglars in their bedroom.
The couple, startled by a noise in their Newtown Road home in Newry, woke up around midnight on Saturday to find two men standing in their bedroom.
The men had burst in through the door, one brandishing an iron bar and the other a torch.
The men demanded money before grabbing a handbag containing cash and making off. The couple were left shaken.
One man is described as being between 25 and 30 years old, of slim build and about 5ft 8ins tall. He has short fair hair and speaks with a Newry accent. The other man is slightly smaller and of heavier build with fair hair and complexion.
Newry SDLP councillor Michael Carr described the burglary as a “dastardly and cowardly attack on an elderly couple”.
He added: “I am sure it was a terrifying ordeal, to be disturbed like that in their own home. I hope people who have information will come forward and pass it on to the police.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact the PSNI's non-emergency number 101.
