A senior judge has warned that the courts will protect taxi drivers from attack.
Belfast Recorder Judge David McFarland made his remarks when he jailed a west Belfast man for 18 months for hijacking a taxi at knifepoint in August last year.
Thomas Magee (22), of Bryanswell Court, Dunmurry, was told he will spend a further 18 months on licence following his release from prison.
The father-of-two pleaded guilty to hijacking the taxi, possession of a knife and stealing £50 of fare money from the car.
Sentencing him at Belfast Crown Court, Judge McFarland said: "Taxi drivers will be protected by the courts. They do carry out an important duty in ferrying members of the public about and working long hours. This is a serious matter and it requires an immediate custodial sentence."
A fellow passenger, a juvenile, was jailed for five months at an earlier hearing over his role in the hijacking,
