Crossbow hit on police car 'accidental'

By Allan Preston

A crossbow bolt that shattered the rear window of a police car in north Belfast was fired accidentally, the PSNI have said.

An appeal was issued after the car parked at Tennent Street police station was damaged between 5pm and 7pm on Wednesday.

The police initially described it as "a reckless act that could have injured either a police officer or a member of the public".

A man has since come forward, with police now satisfied that the incident was not malicious.

The metal tipped bolt was fired using a crossbow from the area around Cambrai Street, meaning the bolt travelled a distance of between 40 to 50 metres.

Sergeant Greg Dawson said: "We do not believe that this was a malicious incident, but we would remind owners of crossbows that these can be dangerous weapons and they should be aware of the possible criminal implications of their use."
