Culture Night: Belfast's streets thronged with crowds on evening of revelry

By David Young

Over 50,000 people thronged the streets and squares of Belfast's Cathedral Quarter last night as Culture Night 2015 got under way.

There were over 250 free events taking place from the afternoon through to 11pm - and quite a few more running late into the night.

Organiser Adam Turkington hailed the event as a success.

"Look around! This place is full of life; the city is transformed, people are smiling! We had 50,000 people here last year and we are way busier this year already."

Over 100 venues took part in the one-day festival that brought magic and spectacle to the city, with a host of outdoor street performances as well as events, talks, tours and exhibitions.

Since the first Culture Night in 2009, over 200,000 people (and hundreds of arts organisations, individuals and businesses) have participated in an event which has become a joyful showcase for the cultural wealth and diversity of the city. - and an essential date in its cultural calendar."
