Customs seize 113,000 cigarettes

More than 113,000 illegal cigarettes have been seized in a series of raids on properties in the Ballymoney area.

The cigarettes were discovered by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) who, along with the PSNI, searched a business and a private residence. Over 16kgs of hand-rolling tobacco — estimated to be worth £33,000 in unpaid excise duty and VAT — and a trailer carrying illegal cigarettes were also seized.

John Whiting, assistant director of criminal investigation for HMRC, said: “Tobacco smuggling is organised fraud, encouraging and supporting criminality within our communities and robbing taxpayers of billions each year in unpaid duty and VAT.”

 Investigations are ongoing.
