Dad (85) hid in bathroom after his son attacked him

By Nevin Farrell

An 85-year-old man feared for his safety and was forced to hide in a bathroom after his son grabbed him by the throat, a court has heard.

The victim called 999 after being attacked by his son - Alistair Shiels (52), of Bush Park in Antrim - who also smashed a piece of furniture on the ground.

A prosecutor told Antrim Magistrates Court yesterday that the incident happened on March 2 at the house the pensioner shared with his son.

Shiels appeared at the court via video link from Maghaberry Prison and admitted charges of assaulting his dad; causing criminal damage to his father's furniture and assaulting and resisting a police officer.

Defence barrister Neil Moore said that the attack was "abhorrent".

District Judge Oonagh Mullan said Shiels "should be ashamed" of himself and said the matter was aggravated by the age of his father.

The judge imposed a six months prison term, suspended for two years.

She also put in place a Restraining Order banning Shiels from contacting his father or entering the Bush Park address.
