Danny Payne assault: Man (19) charged with GBH

A 19-year-old has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent over the assault of a man who was seriously injured after stepping in to break up a fight.

Danny Payne, who is in his 30s and from the Clooney estate, was assaulted by a number of men in Newmarket Street in Derry shortly after 2am on Sunday.

The former Foyle Search and Rescue volunteer stepped in to try and break up an altercation beside the City Walls when he was attacked.

The dad-of-three suffered serious head injuries and had to go through an eight hour operation in hospital. He remains in a critical condition in hospital.

His wife Sarah was also injured in the attack.

A 18-year-old woman and 19-year-old man were arrested on Monday. The man will appear in court on November 15, while the woman has been released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.
