Darren Clarke swings in behind Sport Relief Games
Golf star Darren Clarke is supporting the first Sainsbury's Sport Relief Flagship Games to be held in Belfast next year.
The 2011 Open champion from Dungannon is urging as many men, women and children as possible to take part in the event on March 20.
Custom House Square has been announced as the venue for the games, at which participants will be able to run, walk, swim or cycle to help people in need at home and throughout the world.
Every year groups and charities working with disadvantaged people from all walks of life across Northern Ireland receive major grants from Sport Relief and Comic Relief.
There will be another £50,000 available to community groups and charities in the Sport Relief Community Cash Fund for grants of £500-£1,000, exclusively supported by the Belfast Telegraph.
Belfast will host the games along with Cardiff, Glasgow, London, Sheffield and Norwich.
Clarke is the first major sporting star from Northern Ireland to give his backing to the event.
He said: "Sport Relief is back, and this year it's going to be bigger and better.
"People of Belfast, your city has been selected to host one of six Sainsbury's Sport Relief Flagship Games, so I urge you to sign up to walk, run, swim or cycle.
"Whether you dress yourself from head to toe in fancy dress or don your sporting attire, the money you raise will change people's lives right here in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the rest of the UK and across the world."
Also looking forward to the massive charity event is Lord Mayor of Belfast Arder Carson.
He said: "Belfast is delighted once again to welcome Sport Relief to the city, and we're all looking forward to putting the fun into this fantastic fundraiser. I would personally encourage everyone to step up to the challenge and make the event the most exciting and best supported Sport Relief ever."
The main events to sign up for will be the Sport Relief Mile, Cycle run and Swimathon.
The Mile will begin at Custom House Square and will wind its way around the city centre.
The Swimathon action, meanwhile, will take place a little way away at Queen's PEC.
The day promises to be full of entertainment to give participants and spectators something to enjoy after the Mile, Cycle and Swimathon.
The acts performing and other entertainment will be confirmed closer to the event.
There is a limited period of half-price entry to the event for those ready to commit to the games now.
