Date set for local by-election

The date of the by-election to fill the Castlereagh seat left vacant by former Councillor Iris Robinson has been announced.

Following the formal decision by the chief electoral officer, Douglas Bain, a notice of election has been revealed, naming Thursday, May 6, as polling day.

Filling the void in Castlereagh east, the count will be held on May 7, at Dundonald International Ice Bowl.

Mrs Robinson left her seat earlier this year following concerns over her financial dealings in connection with the lease of the Lock Keeper’s Inn at Shaw’s bridge.

An earlier attempt by the DUP to co-opt Sharon Skillen into the seat failed last month.
