Delegation to promote Derry City of Culture in US

By Brendan McDaid

Londonderry is set to take its City of Culture celebrations across the Atlantic to join forces with the Irish diaspora in America later this year.

A delegation from the city will travel to Boston in November for a major event aimed at promoting the city’s 2013 accolade and boosting links between the US city and the Derry and Donegal areas.

A series of meetings between local representatives and specific American companies were held in the United States earlier this year.

Talks about possible investments are now ongoing with tourism, eco-products, textile and sustainable technology companies, as well as a medical technology and two energy-based firms.

Derry City Council has been approached by Irish America’s leading newspaper, the Irish Echo, to partner with them in the Boston-Northwest Ireland Golden Bridges Reception and Showcase next month.

The event will be staged at the Seaport Hotel and Convention Center, Boston, on November 10 and 11, and it understood representatives of the University of Ulster’s Magee campus are also involved.

A seminar showcase of the north west will be used to inform influential Irish Americans of the planned City of Culture 2013 celebrations.
