Derry couple celebrate mid-flight marriage proposal

By Allan Preston

A high-flying couple from Londonderry are celebrating their engagement after a surprise proposal in the clouds.

Yvonne McDaid unwittingly set the plan in motion after a Christmas gift of a flying lesson for boyfriend Shaun Hasson.

Weeks of planning followed as Shaun enlisted the help of staff at Eglinton flying club as well as his own family members.

Sparing no effort, the message 'Will you marry me?' was written on Lisnaffin beach in 12ft letters in order to be visible from the air.

"As we flew close to the beach I couldn't see anything," Shaun told BBC Radio Foyle.

"Then we came past a bit lower and I was ready with the ring.

"'Can you see the beach?' I asked? I looked at her and she couldn't believe it.

"She just said, 'You're dead.'

"That's Derry code for yes."

After thanking pilot Eugene McShane for his help, the happy couple have since revealed they are expecting a baby.
