A bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of a 12-year-old boy who failed to turn up for his case.

The order was issued by District Judge Barney McElholm at the Juvenile Court in Londonderry yesterday.

The youth was arrested during disturbances at Moss Park in the Galliagh area of Derry on May 23.

The youth, who cannot be named because of his age, has been charged with riotous assembly and with possessing a paint bomb.

In court yesterday his solicitor, Keith Kyle, said the schoolboy was in care and had refused to leave the care home for his scheduled court appearance.

The District Judge said while he was loathe to issue a bench warrant for the arrest of a 12-year-old, he was not going to have the child dictate to him when he would attend court.

Mr McElholm said he hoped the warrant could be perfected by arrangement.
