Two men have appeared in the magistrates court in Londonderry jointly charged with attempting to steal flags belonging to a DUP councillor in the Fountain Estate at the weekend.

Ray Bonner (28), a youth worker from Ivy Terrace, and Padraig Moran (22), from Ederowen Park in the Galliagh area, are alleged to have committed the offence last Saturday. The flags belong to the DUP councillor, Graham Warke.

They're also charged with assaulting a woman and with going equipped for a theft while in possession of a length of rope.

A police officer who connected the defendants to the charges told Deputy District Judge Trevor Browne he had no objection to them being released on bail.

They were both released on their own bail of £150. The case was adjourned until August 19.

Both defendants, who made no reply to the charges, were banned from entering the Fountain Estate and ordered to have no contact with the alleged injured parties.
