Derry plugging in to electric car network

Charging points for a new electric car network are being installed across Derry in a new scheme by the Department for Regional Development.

The DRD is teaming up with a number of business partners to erect a total of seven charge points across the city, including Bishop Street, Carlisle Road, Strand Road, Victoria Market, The Diamond, Templemore Sports Complex and Waterside Railway Station.

The project is aimed at preparing Northern Ireland for a future where cars run on batteries instead of fossil fuels, with grants of up to £5,000 being offered by the Government towards the purchase of the new era cars which can cost between £28,000 and £30,000.

Grants are also available to individuals and businesses to install their own charging stations and it is understood that Derry City Council is considering buying an electric van to avail of the new eco-friendly service.
