Derry restaurant blaze tackled by 70 firefighters
Thick, acrid, black smoke billowed out of a Chinese restaurant yesterday and caused massive disruption in one of the biggest fires in Londonderry in many years.
More than 70 firefighters battled the blaze at the Mandarin Palace on the Queen's Quay.
It started around lunchtime but quickly escalated, causing severe disruption along the Strand Road and Queen's Quay area of the city.
A total of 12 fire appliances rushed to the scene including two aerial cranes, one which was brought from Belfast to help quench the flames.
No casualties were reported, although a number of nearby flats and businesses were evacuated. Several roads were also closed, causing severe traffic disruption.
