Derry thug who threatened NHS worker sent to jail

By Eamonn MacDermott

A man from Londonderry who was caught sleeping in a doctors' common room at Altnagelvin Hospital threatened to "bash" off a wall the head of a staff member who found him.

Liam Bradley (45), of no fixed abode, admitted one charge of common assault on August 12.

The court was told that at around 3am police were called to the hospital after reports of a staff member being threatened.

The officers were told that the staff member entered the common room and found Bradley sleeping on a couch.

When he was told he was not supposed to be there, he threatened to "bash her head against a wall", the court heard.

The employee felt vulnerable and other staff members came along and Bradley left. Police arrived and he was arrested.

District Judge Barney McElholm said Bradley had 229 previous convictions including 27 assaults on police, 15 common assaults and three serious assaults.

He described it as "a scandalous offence" and sentenced Bradley to 24 weeks in custody.
