Derry waves goodbye to Clipper race crews

By Brendan McDaid

Around 10,000 people lined Londonderry’s quay to wave goodbye to the teams who unanimously described their stay as the best experience in their year-long race.

The crews were laden down with food and gifts showered on them over the past week by local firms.

Each team was presented with a special cake made by Doherty’s bakery, iced with their name and logo at the farewell ceremony.

Despite the rain, crowds packed the quay from early Saturday to wave and cheer as the fleet formed a breathtaking Parade of Sail.

The Belfast Telegraph joined the Derry-Londonderry crew as they did a lap of honour around the city centre, with skipper Mark Light shouting out “thank you Legenderry” as his team saluted crowds lining the Peace Bridge.

For many onboard it was an emotional farewell, not least for Mr Light. He said the crews, relatives and race team were blown away by the welcome. He said: “It has been fantastic. The people of the city did us proud.”
