Derry’s lights ceremony draws a crowd of 10,000

By Donna Deeney

Londonderry’s Guildhall Square, Waterloo Place and the Peace Garden were thronged with an estimated 10,000 people for the switch-on of the Christmas lights in the city last night.

This year it was the characters of Frozen who enthralled the children at the Peace Garden which was transformed into a Frozen Forest where all the good little girls and boys could say hello to Elsa and visit Olaf’s igloo and the giant snow globe.

Roisin McGuinness (6) couldn’t wait for Santa to arrive and said she was sure there was no chance that he might get lost. She said: “Santa knows everything so he knows we are here and he knows where I live in Shantallow and he’s coming to my house on Christmas and bringing me presents.”

Right on cue a shout of delight rose from the crowd as Santa was spotted making his way to the all-important switch that lit up the entire city and across the Waterside. Thanks to the magic of Christmas, Santa appeared all over the city, including on the famous walls.
